One of the great things about being a sailor is that, over time, you pick up a resoursefullness which would have passed you by had you not taken to the sea. Sometimes you don't even realize how much you've learned. Then the car breaks down and you remember, "Oh yea, I know about engines and 12 volt electrical systems!". You're trimming trees in the back yard and you remember, "Oh yea, I know about a thousand knots! I bet I could keep that big limb from punching a hole in my roof!".
Knowledge seeps into us like ground water. And it springs back up just when we need it. We find that, even with no resourses, a surprising amount can be done. We also find that living has less to do with what you have than how you use what you do have. And what's more, anything can be done. It may take more time and effort than you might like, but it can be done
