When I learned celestial navigation,
it took a six week class, two other
source books (I actually had to triangulate textbooks), and a ming vase
falling off a high shelf and smacking me on the head before I was able to
understand that most arrogant of navigational tools, the sextant. Even so, I
do not want to hear another word about moonsights. But, I'll never forget the
satisfaction of solving a complex problem involving Arcturus and finding out
for once, I was not in Denver. Of course, time and lack of practice have
dulled my skills, but come on, it's been over two weeks since I've completed
the course.
These days the old skills are becoming more
and more neglected as g.p.s.
units become more and more common. So common in fact, that just the other
day I found myself standing before a vending machine torn between a bag of
peanut M&M's and a magellan 1000. The only reason I walked away with the
M&M's was that I didn't have $129 worth of quarters.
