The western or cowboy shirt, as colorful patterns and snap buttons is that way for a reason.
When we went to market, to pickup horse feed, cubes and such, the lady of the house came along and picked the sacks,
Sacks of the day were cotton and patterned for lady's dresses.(a purchase inducement) Each sack was a yard of material,3 sacks and you
could sew a dress. What was left over went to make the shirts and other necessity's of the day.
With two sacks of different patterns one would be the body of the shirt. The other formed the sleeves, pockets and yoke. Yes, the yoke was necessary, the shirt would split across the back,to make the shirt last longer a yoke was sewn in. Since these were lady's dress patterns, they were quite colorful, usually with contrasting patterns. Long cuffs with 3 snaps held the sleeve tight so the gloves fit easy, Pockets all had snap covers to hold in the contents when the cattle man bent over on his horse, and snaps would open before the shirt tore, causing less work for the house wife. I had a neighbor friend go up for his draft physical and was ribbed unmercifully for his boxers (lilies on a black field) that his mom had made. Is it any wonder that cowboys learned to Fight!! ( below )Thats me and my Dog Blaze sitting on the truck. More Texas Ranches
