If your boat is less than 48' feet off the water line you might want to travel this scenic route. From Galveston to Port Arthur Is pretty much a Ditch, But Past that there is Scenery all the way to Lake Ponchatrain, Their is a small Marina Just west of Rollover Pass that you can tie up for the night. It Has a fuel dock and a nice Restaurant that over looks the I C W. With a full Tank of gas you will make Port Author in one day at 5 knots. there is a small Island just past the city you can anchor off the channel for the night.You are protected from the barge traffic and there is a canal to Sabine lake. do some fishing or
sight see here.

Layed back living on the Bayou

After Passing through Cacasa Swamp, you can take a side trip up the Mamatu River.There is an Anchorage about 4 miles north up River from the ICW. Anchor in an old Oxbow with a small island, north side of it . Don't be surprised if you wake with fisherman dotting the area around you as this is, the 'Cajun fish market'.

Sunset Traveling on the Louisiana Bayous

Further on You can detour south to Avery Island, Home of Tabasco Sauce, anchor there and come back up the next day. Houma is a town that is split into Quarters by two canals.The ICW being one of them. Call a head and tell the lock master if you want one or both of the bridges open.

Jean Laffite's grave on the Bayou Baritaria

Anchor or tie up at the town of Baritaria 2 miles South off the ICW. Swamp tours on Mudbuggies are available here and the Small town is friendly. leave here at Dawn in order to do the Mississippi locks during daylight.

The Creole Queen on the Mississippi out of Harvay Locks

Passing through Harvey Locks you go into the Mississippi River about 7 miles upstream of the Industrial cut, where you turn to go into Lake Ponchatrain. Due to the river current ,it can reach 6 knots, you need to angle toward the east side of the river pronto! This also puts you in the Best place to viewl the town of New Orleans and the famous French Quarter. Jackson Square . Several Steam Boats Among them both the Delta Queen and the Creole Queen dock here and make da illy trips up and down the river area. Now you come to the old city docks identified by long red brick buildings and wharfs. get your crew readied, for just past the piers, you make a power turn into the Industrial Cut. Locking through takes you out of the Mississippi into lake Ponchatrain,or you can turn south to Lake Bourne, If you travel on to the lake, about 3 miles up the north shore you find three Marinas, The City Marina has Transient Docks and this is a good place base your visit to the city. Restaurants, Marine stores , and an old Cajun Fishing town all are next door to the marina. A grocery store and buss stop is just down the street .
